PRODUCTS & PRICING

We specialize in urban backyard chicken coop systems. Our chicken coops, rabbit hutches, and runs can get where other's can't! Our coop and rabbit hutch designs can fit through any 46" gate opening. If that width isn't an option, we also sell them as a 45min build kit for on-site assembly with printed instructions. The coop kit can even fit in the back of a van!

Gotland chicken coops and rabbit hutches are much larger and will out-perform anything you can find at the farm stores! Built to withstand any weather Michigan can throw at it, year after year.

Hen Count Note: Chicken count estimates are based on average-sized breeds and are "comfortable counts" vs the maximum possible that you see noted on coops at farm stores. Larger or smaller birds will adjust the comfort numbers up or down accordingly.

From your first call to chickens in their new home — here's the process. Most builds take a few weeks depending on season and complexity.

1

Get in touch

Call or text Dan to talk through your space, flock size, and any custom needs. Visits to the off-grid workshop welcome.

2

3

We build it

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Quick answers to the questions we hear most often. Don't see yours? Call or text Dan at 231-750-2332.

How long does a build take?

Lead time varies by season and how customized your coop is. Spring and summer are our busiest times. Most stock-design coops are built and delivered within a few weeks of ordering. Custom builds can take longer. Call or text Dan with your timeline and we'll give you an honest estimate.

Do you deliver, or do I pick up?

Both. We deliver across West Michigan and bring everything in one trip — just point where you want it and we'll set it up. You can also pick up at the off-grid Muskegon workshop. If your gate is narrower than 46″ or you want to avoid delivery, ask about our 45-minute build kit option that fits in the back of a van.

What's your service area?

We regularly deliver across a 100+ mile radius of Muskegon, including Grand Rapids, Holland, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Ludington, Cadillac, Big Rapids, Greenville, Ionia, and 40+ other Michigan cities. Beyond that range? We've delivered across the state and as far as Akron, OH for repeat customers — call us with your address. See the full list and a delivery cost estimator on our service area page.

Can I customize a coop?

Yes. Most of our stock designs can be modified — different hardware cloth options, additional vents, metal roof upgrades, extra nesting boxes, removable roosts, predator-proof digger skirting, and more. See the Enhancements & Upgrades section for individual add-on prices, or call to scope a fully custom build.

What materials do you use?

¾″ thick BCX plywood on all sides, 4x4 treated legs, your choice of ½″ hardware cloth or 1″ hex galvanized poultry wire (or a combination). Coops sit 2′ off the ground with chicken ladders, nesting boxes, and seasonal vents standard. Optional galvanized metal roofs over the run. Built to handle Michigan weather year after year.

Do I need a permit to keep chickens?

Maybe — it depends entirely on your city or township. We've put together a searchable lookup of chicken ordinances for 57 cities and townships in West Michigan, with hen limits, rooster rules, permit details, and coop setbacks for each one. Always confirm current rules with your municipality before building.

Can I visit the workshop?

Yes — visitors are welcome. Our solar and wind powered off-grid workshop in North Muskegon has working demo coops where you can see the construction up close, ask questions, and even help gather eggs. Call or text ahead to schedule.

How many hens fit in your coops?

Our hen counts are "comfortable counts" based on average-sized breeds — not the maximum cram-them-in number you'll see on coops at farm stores. Larger or smaller breeds adjust those numbers up or down. Small coop systems comfortably fit 3–8 hens; large systems comfortably fit 4–15+ hens. Talk to us about your flock and we'll point you to the right size.

What about ducks, rabbits, or meat birds?

The same coop and run designs work great for ducks, rabbits (as hutches), and meat birds. We've built 650+ coops, runs, duck houses, and rabbit hutches since 2013, and we use our own designs with our own animals — so we know what works.

RESOURCES & LOCAL RULES

Before you pick a coop spot, it helps to know what your city or township allows. Setbacks, hen limits, rooster rules, and permits vary block by block across West Michigan — and the wrong placement can mean moving the whole thing later.

Permits & Ordinances Lookup

We've pulled chicken-keeping rules from 57 cities and townships within 60 miles of Muskegon, including Grand Rapids, Holland, Grand Haven, Ludington, and most of West Michigan. Each entry quotes the actual ordinance, links to the official source, and shows the date we pulled it.

Search by city or township, filter by status (allowed / conditional / not allowed), and see at a glance:

  • How many hens you can keep
  • Whether roosters are allowed
  • Whether a permit is required (and the fee, if any)
  • Coop setbacks from property lines and neighbors
  • Lot size requirements

Ordinances change. Always confirm the current rules with your municipality before building.

Look up your city or township

Tip from Dan

If your local rules require setbacks from neighboring dwellings (most do), measure those before you commit to a coop size. Our coops fit through any 46″ gate, but the placement still has to clear local minimums. If you're unsure, send me a photo of your yard and I'll help you scope it.

Service Area & Delivery Cost Estimator

We deliver across 50+ Michigan cities within a 100+ mile radius of Muskegon — and farther on a per-customer basis. The estimator on our service area page calculates your delivery cost based on current gas price, round-trip drive time, trailer rental, loading time, and on-site install — full transparency into the math.

See where we deliver & estimate your cost

How pricing works

Coop prices are listed in Products & Pricing. Delivery is a separate cost based on how far you are from the workshop — the calculator gives you an honest estimate before you commit.
